Description
People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.
~Iris Murdoch [fr. A Fairly Honourable Defeat]

Camas; Camassia;Common Camas;early camas;quamash;Indian hyacinth;camash;wild hyacinth
Camassia quamash
Family : Asparagaceae [some sources: Liliaceae]
This meadow spring wildflower with blue violet star-shaped flowers is native to Canada and the United States, found along the Pacific Northwest coast and east into Idaho. Six species of Camassia are recognized in North America.
Long treasured by the First Nations people, celebrations are still held for this diet staple. It was a cherished plant for cooking, high in food value. The sweet bulbs, when dry-roasted or baked, yield the carbohydrate inulin, which is converted to fructose as it cooks.

Rolling or shaping thin strips of paper to create decorative effects is called quilling, and that is what I am reminded of when I see the leaves of the camas unfurl.
My original images captured in natural light, then combined to show the full bloom, the bloom before it opens, and the quill art of the leaves as they unfurl on the stem .... nature in all its splendour :)

Connie you are so welcome, I am glad you got a chance to see my comments and reply. Such encouraging replies too. Gob-smacked I learned from a British friend of mine. Meaning: utterly astonished; astounded; with reference to clapping a hand to one's mouth in astonishment. Heather King had not heard of it and she liked it. You are doing a great job! Love your support!! 💕 Janet

Revisiting this one Connie, love the purple and yellow. Always colors that compliment. Can't believe it was 13 days ago I viewed this. A ladybug's dream.

Thank you for revisiting, Janet; I can't believe it's been 13 days either! It takes me time to catch up ... something I never seem to do .. but I still keep trying :))

This is so gorgeous, I am GOBSMACKED! And I learned something new, quilling. I am reminded of a quill pen with these. Beautiful colors and beautiful effect! LV/FV Janet

Hi Janet! Top of a fine new morning to you! Gobsmacked... I haven't heard that word for a long time... likely I'll be using it myself now, it's a good word, lol ... Paper quill art is so fascinating in its fine intricacy .. the curl of the leaves on the Camas stem is so much like it. Thank you so much for your appreciation of this work :))
