Delphinium (larkspur)
Delphinium consolida
Family : Ranunculaceae
From the Greek delphinion = dolphin-like (the spur on the wildflower resembles a leaping dolphin; it is missing in most hybrids)
Ancient Greeks used the delphinium seeds as an antidote for a scorpion's sting, and during the Middle Ages, the seeds were ground into a poultice for head lice.
In the 16th century, the delphinium was grown by the herbalist Gerard, who produced its double flowers. While these blooms are basically blue, there are also shades from white to deep purple, in addition to which wild species even have red or yellow flowers.
The delphinium is a family of 250 species, and while there are differences between them, it is often (mistakenly) called a larkspur. Bumblebees are great pollinators of these blooms.
The floral symbol of this flower is Lightness, or Levity.

Returning from a summer overseas, it was a treat to see the delphinium still blooming late into September ..... an aura of harmonizing blues and mauves captured in natural light; uncropped; unedited : Nature in all its splendour .
