Callicarpa dichotoma

Family : Lamiaceae
Genus: Callicarpa

The human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man.

This colourful shrub orginates from Korea. The genus name Callicarp is derived from the Greek word for Beautiful and Fruit, and it certainly is that once it comes out in its full autumn attire. An abundance of berries adorns this deciduous bush, which birds are very much attracted to. Other wildlife, including squirrels, feast on these berries (one website describes this as a 'squirrel's version of take out'!).
Apparently this berry is not only for the birds (and the squirrels); some people make jellies from them.
The name Purple Pearls suits these marvelous, richly coloured berries so well for they surely are a beautiful adornment to the autumn season in the way of beauty that is Nature's own. Whenever the fall season arrives, I head out eagerly to the places I know where, like the wildlife, I will feast .... with my eyes and camera ... on these delights. .
