Description
Japanese Quince ( Chaenomeles japonica; C. japonica; flowering quince; Japonica; Maule's Quince)
Family : Rosaceae
This popular ornamental shrub (and bonsai) is native to Japan. Its flowers are usually red, although they can also be white or pink.
If it bears fruit, it will be small, yellow, and apple shaped. The fruit will be very hard, and astringent, and while it can be eaten raw, it would be an unpleasant experience. It is more appealing to the palate as a marmalade (apparently there is more pectin in it than in a 'true' quince or apple), a preserve, or - for those who imbibe - in a liqueur.
Apparently, too, flowering quinces also contain more Vitamin C than lemons!

* ------------------------------------- *
There is a tree that blooms across the street, and only recently have I really paid much attention to it. I will be doing more attention-paying in the future. It really is a gem, and it flowers beautifully. This image was taken just after a spring rain, on a walk between showers and just before the sun would begin to set.
Taken in natural light ; unaltered ; Uncropped, : Nature in all its natural splendour.
