Description
One day the woman was standing by this window and looking down into the garden, when she saw a bed which was planted with the most beautiful rampion (rapunzel), and it looked so fresh and green that she longed for it, she quite pined away, and began to look pale and miserable. Then her husband was alarmed, and asked: "What ails you, dear wife?" "Ah," she replied, "if I can't eat some of the rampion, which is in the garden behind our house, I shall die."
~ fr. fairytale Rapunzel , by The Brothers Grimm
* ----------------------- *
Campanula rotundifolia (Bluebell ; Harebell; Witches Thimble; Tussock Bluebell)
Family : Campanulaceae (Bellflower)
There are over 500 species (and more subspecies) of these flowers native to the Northern Hemisphere, the Mediterranean east to the Caucasus, Asia and Africa.
One species of bellfower was once a popular vegetable, grown for its spinach-like leaves, and the radish-like roots. The character, Rapunzel, makes reference to this in the Brothers Grimm fairytale (her name originated from this plant).
I am a bookworm, and even at a very young age, I immersed myself in pages and stories. I still remember a big, red tome with fairytales in it, with illustrations inside I remember to this day.
One of my favorite characters when I was young was Rapunzel, and I have to admit, it was her long, golden tresses I was enthralled with - I certainly do not remember anything about her pining away for the taste of the campanula leaves! :)

Connie, I love your description; I had never heard that story before - wonderful, as is this fantastic photograph. Not only because of the beautiful color and composition but how the petals drop makes me think of Rapunzel's long hair. Fabulous!
Connie Handscomb replied:
Yes, indeed, Maggie, vivid blue suits her! thank you so much for your wonderful comment & support! I had not heard the story before myself until I researched it {oops! looks like I forgot to mention the sources on this one; if I remember them, I'll provide later} ;))
