A Dollop Of Red
One cannot think well, love well and sleep well if one has not dined well.
~ Virginia Woolf

Flag lily ; Crimson flag ; Caffre Lily
(Hesperantha coccinea; Schizostylis coccine)
Family Iridaceae
The flag lily is a conundrum of a bloom: it looks like a spring crocus yet blooms in late summer through the autumn, is brightly coloured as a crocosmia, rises on a stem similar to a gladiola, is named as a lily yet belongs to the family of Irises. It certainly had me stumped until I realized that this is what the crimson flag looks like when it is just beginning to open. And, when it does, this little bud will have lovely stamens that sway elegantly over its delicate petals.
While it likes the sun, this flower native to South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe is found in damp meadows and stream banks. It will bloom from late summer through to October, or even into mid-winter.

This bloom is so sweet and luscious, it looks almost good enough to eat! Feast your eyes on this enticing floral delicacy; indulge your senses in the palatable beauty of this little bud .... and if you would like 'seconds', it is here for you to view any time you are feeling peckish ... Bon Appetit! :)
