Description
Marsh Marigold (Kingcup)
Caltha palustris
From Greek 'caltha' (kalatho) = goblet
Family : Ranunculaceae
Dairy farmers called this flower 'cowslip' because it likes to grow along streams and creek beds, causing hoofed feet to slip along the banks. However, it is the Primula veris which we more commonly know as Cowslip, and the Marsh Marigold is called Kingcup (it is like the world's biggest buttercup, to which family it belongs). Apparently the number of names this plant has is a record-breaking 80!
This plant grows freely across boggy areas of Canada , and the United Kingdom.
Medicinally, it was used (in Ireland) as a poultice for boils and a drink was made for heart conditions. It has been used to remove warts, and in the treatment of anemia. A tea can be made from the leaves as a diuretic and laxative.
Culinary uses involved the buds, which were pickled similar to capers, and the leaves can be cooked and used as a spinach. It has also been known to substitute rennet in the dairy.
Caution: all parts of the plant can irritate or blister the skin. Use with care.
