Brighton, a popular British seaside destination, is in the South Downs of England. Along the waterfront, typical of this area, are fairground attractions, arcades (the first amusement machines were installed on the pier in 1905), pubs and restaurants, market stalls and shops.
Amusement parks such as this one became popular in the 19th century, evolved from the travelling fairgrounds, and local fairs and carnivals that were around in the Middle Ages. The rides emanated from the influence of their popularity in the American amusement parks. Londoners wanted a departure from the stress of their working lives; a more colourful respite from their dusty, big city, and its urban brick and grime.
While beach areas can get quite busy in our nearby cities, they do not have this colourful type of carnival atmosphere, and where we live, there are many beaches even within walking distance that are quiet and one can rest, relax, and listen to the waves lapping on the shore. (Recently, a ferris wheel had been proposed for the waterfront of one of our neighbouring surburbs, but it was voted down).
Rest and play are necessary to our enjoyment of life, regardless of its type, and perhaps more so when the troubled world we live appears to escalate out of control.
I am fortunate to be blessed with having both in my life. The colourful landscape in this image shows an enjoyment of people of all races and walks, and even if they are not listening to the waves, they are listening to each other, and enjoying each other's company. I wish continued peace and similar happiness for all, always.

I knew this was England before I even read your description, Connie - how brilliantly you captured its spirit, and how beautiful the entire scene is, with the seawater green being reproduced in various objects on the beach and the elegant balustrade.
